Liquid die forging, also known as squeeze casting, continuous casting and forging, is an emerging metal forming process that has both casting characteristics and is similar to die forging. It is to pour a certain amount of cast metal liquid directly into a cavity coated with lubricant, and continuously apply mechanical static pressure, using the easy flow and forging technology of metal casting solidification to make the solidified hard shell plastically deformed, so that the metal crystallizes and solidifies under pressure and forcibly eliminates the shrinkage cavities and shrinkage formed by solidification shrinkage, so as to obtain liquid die forging parts without casting defects. People usually call this method liquid die forging.
 
Liquid die forging (squeeze casting) can be divided into two categories: direct squeeze casting and indirect squeeze casting. The direct squeeze process is similar to metal die forging, and the pressure is directly applied to the entire surface of the liquid metal; the indirect squeeze process is close to die casting, and the pressure acts indirectly on the liquid metal through the runner. The internal quality of indirect squeeze castings is lower than that of direct extrusion parts but higher than that of die castings.
 
Features
Liquid die forging is an emerging technology that combines casting and forging. It has the advantages of simple casting process, low production cost, and complex product shapes. It also has the characteristics of fine grains, uniform structure, good mechanical properties, and high forming precision of die forging products. The main points are as follows:
(1) During the forming process, the unsolidified molten metal crystallizes, solidifies, and flows under the action of isostatic pressure from beginning to end; the solidified metal layer undergoes plastic deformation under pressure, and has a thermal deformation structure with fine grains and uniform structure. At the same time, the pressure makes the outer side of the workpiece close to the inner wall of the mold, making the shape and size of the workpiece accurate.
(2) Since the first crystallized solidified layer produces plastic deformation, it consumes some energy. Therefore, the isostatic pressure experienced by the molten metal is not a constant value, but decreases as the solidified layer thickens.
(3) Under the action of pressure, the solid-liquid zone undergoes forced shrinkage compensation, which can eliminate defects such as shrinkage cavities and looseness inside the workpiece and improve the mechanical properties of the workpiece.
(4) Compared with ordinary hot die forging, the fluidity of molten metal is much greater than that of solid metal, and the performance of filling the mold cavity is better. A pair of dies can be used to form parts with relatively complex shapes at one time.
(5) The density and mechanical properties are basically the same as those of die forgings.
